Alex Tahinos is the founding principal of fka design, a multidisciplinary practice that operates across scales and typologies. From architectural design and cultural installations to master plans and speculative futures. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Maryland and a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a licensed architect in New York State and holds NCARB certification.
Prior to founding fka, Tahinos worked at renowned firms including UNStudio, Studio Libeskind, and ODA, and has collaborated with practices such as SU11, Young & Ayata, and Mark Foster Gage Architecture. His professional experience spans cultural, residential, commercial, hospitality, and campus planning projects, often guided by a conceptual framework that challenges disciplinary boundaries.
He is currently a Visiting Professor at Pratt Institute’s GALAUD program, where he teaches advanced design studios at the graduate and post-graduate levels and serves as Co-Coordinator of the Master of Science in Architecture program. He has previously lectured at The Ohio State University and Universidad del Valle, and has been invited as a guest critic at institutions including Columbia University, the University of Pennsylvania, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and the University of Maryland.
Tahinos’s design research explores the intersection of aesthetics, technology, and theory—often through provocation, sampling, and translation across media. His work resists categorization, embracing architecture as a site of both discipline and escape. He has exhibited work in Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Shanghai, and Venice, and has participated in the Venice and Malaysian Biennales. His work has been featured in multiple publications and books, and he was awarded the AIA Studio Prize in 2017, with coverage in Architectural Record.
At the core of fka design is a desire to rethink how and where architecture happens—seeking collaborators and clients willing to cultivate new responses to old problems, and to invent structures, spaces, and ideas that belong equally to the future and the now.
