How do you design an observation deck in the middle of the most iconic cities on earth? It cannot be done without creating some sort of spectacle or icoic gesture that redefines what public space is and can do. There is only one way to stand out in New York and that is to shine.
The Torch is a unique observation deck experience atop a 300 key hotel that promises to be the new skyline icon and the new destination for visitors from all over the world.
The concept was defined by the selfie moment where everyone wants to have their own moment in the spotlight. In order to achieve this, we create a nine-foot corrugated facade made of four distinct shapes where groups of 2-6 people could comfortably fit to take their group photos and selfies. This concept almost doubled the linear footage of facade but also allows for the most unique and personal experience ever had above New York.
The tower is also defined by a large exterior cut through the observation deck to allow for both interior and exterior experience as you traverse down the three decks. At the end you would encounter a large two-story michelin star restaurant where you can sit in a built-in cubby table against the glass. Below the restaurant levels, and close to the base of the stem, sits a large open space that houses three 200-foot drop rides each that face a different direction and give a different view of the city as well as the Hudson river.
It is interesting to think how can New York continuously outdo itself in terms of the spectacle, but yet again, we have created one of the most iconic structures that ultimiately separates Times Square even further from the “authentic” and closer to the utopic city that never sleeps.
