Oorsterkokseiland is a large scale mixed-use project in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The project’s large scope includes public program and residential to go with 75,000 sqm of office space. UNStudio’s outlook on the project was based on its extensive knowledge in innovative campus design. My contribution was spread onto various parts of the project at varying scales. Working from spot-plans and organization up to structure and performative analysis. My main focus was on massing and facade. This is where skills from academia such as multiple software mastery and scripting helped expedite the process. The massing and aesthetic focus was directed towards creating innovation in a tightly regulated bounding box. The facade was a considerate amount of effort in creating an interesting yet subtle affect that would begin to reflect and refract light in multiple ways. The exterior bounding box also had severe restraint on sound and light regulation because of the adjacent train tracks and main road. The study into facade systems and research into alternatives such as closed-cavity or double facades were crucial. One other major task was that of performative testing through environmental parametricism. Though these were the main focuses, throughout the process I was handed a whole range of tasks and goals to help move the project forward. The design of the corporate campus was a formal struggle between capacity and innovation. When density increases and a plot of land is so limited, there needs to be a clear diagram of how the building responds to its site. Simply put, this project’s main problem was fitting a mini city onto a tiny site surrounded by water, train stations, and busy roadways. By lifting the main massing, and pull its corners away from the busy and noisy areas, the buildings office program pushes away while the public program begins to spill outward. By creating courtyards into the mass, we can begin to bring direct and indirect light, while also control sound for offices. Lastly the sites extremely prominent location at the city center, begs for a chance to view the skyline of the old city from a roof terrace. Overall the struggle of maintaining a design language and a innovative and contemporary character, was at odds with the internal capacity and site constraints, more than most projects would have to deal with.
