1161 Ellsworth reimagines the data center as more than a hidden utility. It becomes an urban artifact of contemporary infrastructure. Designed to balance operational efficiency with architectural expression, the project transforms a typically opaque building type into a legible and dynamic presence.
The design explores the relationship between performance and texture. A system of layered facade geometries shifts between flat, angled, and curved forms. These moves optimize environmental response while creating moments of material depth, light variation, and human-scaled detail. The mechanical screening system continues this approach, using prefabricated elements arranged in a rhythmic pattern that balances operability with enclosure.
Inspired by the surrounding context, where industrial heritage meets a growing pedestrian culture, the project reinterprets infrastructure as public-facing architecture. Tactile surfaces, sculpted transitions, and layered compositions invite engagement from both close and distant viewpoints, positioning the data center as a working machine that embraces its role in the urban landscape.
At 1161 Ellsworth, infrastructure becomes architecture. It is efficient and expressive, technical and textured, useful and undeniably beautiful.
